FAQ - Everything you need to know
I’m a beginner photographer. Is this tour suitable for me?
Yes, my photo tours are suitable to photographers of all levels. During the tour I’ll teach you everything you need to know about landscape photography, from the use of filters to blur clouds and rivers to creating stunning HDR and panoramic photos. I’ll also teach you how to find great compositions and how to use a wide-angle lens for maximum impact.
I don’t want to hike, can I still join one of your tours?
Yes, the tour to the Ahornboden in fall offers great scenery with minimal hiking. We’ll stay in hotels next to the road and even the furthest photo spot is less than an easy 10 minute hike away from the car park. The focus of this tour is to give you a more relaxing experience and to take time during the day to edit our freshly shot photos.
All of my other photo tours require more hiking to reach secluded and wild photo spots.
Can I bring my drone?
Yes, drones are welcome on my photo tours. They offer amazing new compositions that allow you to see the mountains in a new light. I’m an experienced pilot and I’ll be happy to help you get the most out of your drone.
Bare in mind however that local laws may prohibit you from flying if you don’t have a valid license. I also encourage you keep your drone away from other hikers and photographers as to minimize your impact on other people’s experience.
Of course, bringing a drone adds more weight to your backpack so you’ll have to decide if that’s worth it to you.
I have never slept in a European mountain hut. What is it like?
European mountain huts come in all sizes and shapes, from the most basic bothys to large, sprawling complexes complete with a ball room. The mountain huts we’ll stay in are all manned huts. This means there’s a bar with food and drink on order and the evening meal is à la carte. Usually the food is simple but excellent with much local produce being used. The common room is always heated, the rest of the hut might not be.
Sleeping quarters usually feature three or four bunk beds per room. Each bed has a pillow and a set of thick woolen blankets. Due to hygienic reasons, the use of a sleeping bag liner and pillowcase is mandatory.
All huts have running water and sanitary toilets and unless otherwise specified, mountain huts in our tours all feature hot showers.
How fit do I need to be for the photo tour?
With the exception of the tour to the Ahornboden in fall, each photo tour features a moderate amount of hiking, sometimes with a heavy backpack. If you are short of breath, have limited mobility or have difficulty keeping your balance, these tours are not for you.
On the other hand, anyone in good health and with a can do attitude can easily complete the hiking that’s required. We’ll always take it slow and there’s plenty of time to rest. If you already have hiking experience, especially in multi-day hiking, this tour should be easy for you.
I’m afraid of heights. Is this a problem?
Generally not. During the tour we’ll never venture close to any cliffs or big drops. We will however make use of gondola’s to reach photo spots and hike on sometimes steep mountain trails. If the use of a gondola or hiking on mountain trails brings up too much anxiety, these photo tours are not for you. The exception in this rule is the fall tour to the Grosser Ahornboden. During this tour there is next to no hiking and no height difference to overcome.
