Austria June 20-27 2026
Austria in summer
The landscape of Austria is incredibly diverse. From the dramatic limestone peaks in the north to the snowcapped mountains of East Tyrol you’ll find many unknown gems. Add to that the many lush meadows, glacier fed waterfalls and fragrant wildflowers and you have the recipe for an unforgettable photo tour.
Late June is the perfect time to visit because of the vibrant foliage and abundant wildflowers. All lakes and rivers are full from the snowmelt and the last snow gives the high mountains a distinct alpine feel. This sets the stage for perfect captures of idyllic mountain scenes.
This tour is set up so that you can sample everything Austria has to offer. We’ll move from the lovely Salzburgerland to the impressive and remote central Alps in Tyrol & East Tyrol, after which we’ll finish the dramatic northern limestone Alps.

Itinerary
The photo tour is set up as a roadtrip past Austria’s loveliest highlights. During the week we’ll cover a lot of ground, sleeping in hotels and mountain huts situated right next to epic photo spots.
Saturday
After the pick up from Salzburg Central Station we’ll drive a short distance to Golling an der Salzach where we’ll photograph a lovely waterfall surrounded by ancient forests. Here we can practice with neutral density filters and long exposures to blur the water.
Sunday
We’ll have a relaxing morning to prepare for the coming days. Then it’s time for the drive to East Tyrol, where we’ll head to the Lienzer Hütte where we’ll stay two nights. This hut is situated in a wild valley filled with streams, waterfalls and wildflowers. The hike up to the Lienzer Hütte takes three hours and requires 300 meters of vertical ascent. Luckily, we’ll take plenty breaks to photograph the stunning scenery.
Monday
We’ll shoot both sunrise and sunset at various scenes around the hut. During the day we can explore the valley or relax in the hut.
Tuesday
It’s time to leave the beautiful Lienzer Hütte, but first we add one more sunrise shoot. After the hike down we head to our hotel in the Virgental to rest after two long days at the Lienzer Hütte. Near the hotel you’ll find an old water mill and a small chapel, both ideal photo spots.
Wednesday
Today we head to another mountain hut, this time situated in the famous Kitzbüheler Alps. The hut is situated next to a spectacular alpine lake and offers a great balcony view of the peaks of the northern limestone Alps. We reach the hut by cable car and then a 1.5 hour hike covering 250 meters of vertical ascent.
Thursday
We photograph sunrise at the lake, hoping to catch perfect reflections in the still water. After breakfast we head back down the mountain and drive to the remote Ahornboden in the Karwendel mountain range. This spectacular valley is surrounded by vertical limestone cliffs taller than the ones in Yosemite! The valley floor is covered with old maple trees, making for a perfect foreground. We lodge at the perfectly located and luxurious Eng Alm hotel, which has a sauna and wellness. We’ll stay at the hotel for two nights.
Friday
We catch sunrise and sunset at the Ahornboden but during the day we explore the area and drive to the wild Isar valley. Here, the Isar river meanders through a forested valley with epic snowcapped peaks in the background. Those who want to rest can stay at the hotel.
Saturday
Sadly, the last day of the tour. After one last sunrise shoot and breakfast we’ll drive back to Salzburg Central Station where I leave you with a camera filled with photos and a head filled with memories.
